Te Haumihiata Mason

  • Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Pango, Te Arawa
  • Reo Māori tutor, consultant, translator, script writer and editor.

Te Haumihiata Mason has spent a lifetime devoted to te reo Māori. Her formative years were spent in a monolingual Māori language community at a time when most of the food for the table came from the land, bush, river and sea. Growing up in this environment instilled in Te Haumihiata a passion for te reo Māori, a love of native flora and fauna and a compulsion for growing things. It also paved the way for some exciting work throughout a career dedicated to the revitalisation of te reo Māori.

More recently Te Haumihiata has translated Shakespeare’s famous Sonnet 18 and in 2012, an abridged version of Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida that was performed at the Globe Theatre in London, UK. She recently translated Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet which is now published.
